Decatur version of classic board game available this weekend

As the holiday shopping season begins in earnest this weekend, a local church has a gift idea that showcases Decatur. DecaturAreaOpoly might be something that shoppers encounter while doing their Black Friday shopping.

Members of Heartland Community Church will be selling the game at Hickory Point Mall all day on Friday. Then they will be at Sam's Club from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

Proceeds from selling the game will go toward helping the church's mission in Guatemala. A group of 7 women and 6 men recently returned from helping out in Guatemala, said Kathy Stubblefield, the team leader for the trip. Those on the mission trip conducted vacation Bible school for children and helped build a ministry compound in an impoverished village in the rainforest region.

Stubblefield said it was a worthwhile trip and plans are in the works for a return in March. She said the Decatur version of Monopoly makes a good keepsake and collectors' item for those interested in different versions of the classic board game.

“It was a big venture,” she said. “It's a good Christmas present.”

Creating the game tested the business skills of church members who sold advertising space. The game, which shows the City of Decatur, Decatur Civic Center, Pepsi plant and StarTek, sells for $29.95. For those who don't find it this weekend, it is available at the church, Giggles, Haines & Essick Co., Kenney's Ace Hardware in Mount Zion and Mr. John's School of Cosmetology.
