There are losses and there are bad losses and Sunday's loss to Northwestern goes into that latter category.

Bad loss. Really bad loss.

Northwestern looked like it was running a layup drill in the second half, zig-zagging its way to 14-for-21 shooting. The fact that Northwestern scored on 16 of 20 possessions down the stretch is proof that Illinois didn't come ready to play defense Sunday and paid a price for playing that way.

Winning this game was supposed to be a given.

Now four of the next five are on the road.

We've seen how well this team can play and we've seen how poorly this team can play. The fact that they are capable of showing us either side on any given night doesn't bode well for putting together an extended stretch of sharp play.

It's very disappointing.

Things could change, but here on Super Bowl Sunday it feels like we're watching another Illini basketball team unable to establish a likeable identity, destined to fishtail to the finish line.

I thought that identity would at least include a nightly dose of good defense.

Then I saw Sunday's performance.

Bad loss. Really bad loss.
