What do you like best about what you do? The best thing about my work in schools and in the community is watching others accomplish a goal. Being an educator can, at times, be trying. There is never enough time, never enough resources, to accomplish all you would like to do for your students. However, I have so much pride seeing former students being successful, graduating, raising families, having careers, and, most importantly, being good people, that all of those troubles seem unimportant.
What do you like best about working or living in the community? I’ve grown up in Assumption and lived here most of my adult life. The things I love most about my community are the relationships that have been built and fostered. Families have lived here for generations, so everyone knows your life story. No matter the problem, someone is always willing to lend a hand. Several years ago, my youngest sister passed away in a car accident, and the community support that we were given was unbelievable. The love we felt definitely helped us through the hardest time of our lives. In some small way, working and volunteering here makes me feel like I am able to reciprocate some of that love and support.
What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area? The small communities surrounding Decatur have features that are often overlooked. Capitalizing on all the area has to offer would benefit everyone. There are great work opportunities, fantastic restaurants and fun activities within a short drive of Decatur. If our communities could work together, collaborate instead of compete, we would have something to offer young people with varying interests and goals.
