DECATUR -- Gladys Fern Coventry, 90, of Decatur, passed away at 10:57 AM Friday, December 1, 2017 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Decatur.

Gladys was born September 28, 1927 on a farm near Bethany, Illinois the daughter of Harry and Tressie (Webb) Coventry. She retired from the telephone company a few years ago. Gladys began her career in Houston, Texas working at Southern Bell Telephone Company Marine Switchboard at Houston which was the nerve center of company’s ship to shore radio-telephone service. There was once a photo in the Houston newspaper stating here is Gladys Coventry, Houston marine operator, completes a call coming in from one of the shrimp boats in the Gulf. She once led quite an interesting life.

Surviving are her two brothers Jack Leon Coventry of Decatur and Wayne Coventry of Shelbyville and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.

Graveside services to celebrate Glady’s life will be 2:00 PM Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Findlay Cemetery in Findlay, Illinois with Rev. David Gaffron officiating.
