Vine Street, Arthur, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Kara was born July 24, 1978 in Champaign, the daughter of Henry Michael and Cheryl Sue (Holaday) Hilgenberg. She married the love of her life, Jonathan David “JD” Kuhns on July 12, 2003 in Arthur where they made their home.
Kara graduated from Arthur High School in 1996. She was proud to have broken the school record for the girls 800 meter race, was named to all-conference in volleyball, was elected homecoming queen, and elected class president her junior and senior years. She was accepted into the honors program in speech and communication disorders at Eastern Illinois University and graduated cum laude in 1999. In 2001, she completed a graduate honors project, earning her master’s degree. While at EIU, she was active on campus including being elected president of her sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau, and being named Top Ten Greek Women, in addition to other honors. She later earned a master’s degree in education administration from EIU. Kara loved children and upon graduation, she worked as a speech pathologist with elementary students in Tolono, Arcola, and most recently in the Arthur School District. For a short time, Kara also worked in some home health, early intervention, and was clinical faculty for University of Illinois speech pathology students.
Kara had a deep faith in God that was evident in all she did. She will be remembered for her ability to bring people together for the good of all. Kara’s kindness, wisdom, sense of humor, and gentle spirit were treasured by all who knew her. Kara was dedicated to her friends, family, and colleagues and enjoyed spending time laughing and working on projects.
Kara’s primary calling, however, was being a wife and mother. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family. She loved playing games with JD and their girls, going to the lake, and traveling. She organized many activities with family and friends, and looked forward to outings with her cousins. She was a faithful and active member of the Arthur United Methodist Church. She initiated several activities, including the praise band, small groups, and at times was called upon to teach Sunday School and plan events.
Left to cherish Kara’s memory are her loving husband, JD; daughters, Laura Honoure and Elizabeth Ann; her parents, Mike and Cheryl Hilgenberg; brother, Gregg Hilgenberg and his wife Danielle; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Willis and Dee Kuhns; brother-in-law, Mark Kuhns; niece, Payton; nephews, Christopher and Ethan; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was welcomed into heaven by her maternal and paternal grandparents and her aunt Honoure.
Memorials are suggested to the Laura and Elizabeth Education Fund; Arthur United Methodist Church Building Fund; or the Kara Kuhns A-L-A-H Student Support Fund, c/o the State Bank of Arthur.
