DECATUR — Thomas F. (Big Tom) Rutherford, Sr. 78, Decatur, passed away on March 3, 2013 at McKinley Court Care Center, Decatur, IL.
Tom was born on August 16, 1934 in Bolivia, IL, the son of Tom and Mary Alice Frazee Rutherford.
He attended Decatur High School and served as a Fireman in the Air Force from 1951-1955 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army Occupation Medal Germany. Tom married Audra Joan Reatherford on August 16, 1956. Tom worked in various occupations in his life but was most proud of his time with Big Tom’s Produce.
Tom loved working with youth and showed that in officiating high school sports, Cub Master for Southeast School Pack #1, coaching Junior League Football and St. Pat’s Girls Basketball. He served as Commander for American Legion Post 105 and was a member of the Dancing Dolls. He sang with the Decatur Chordsmen and First Lutheran Church Choir. He also served with Stephen’s Ministry at First Lutheran Church. Tom was also an avid follower of Drum Corps International traveling to many competitions throughout the states. Tom was a die hard Cubs Fan and loved watching Illini sports.
Tom was most proud of his family.
His Children survive him: Thomas F. Rutherford Jr. (Theresa), Timothy F. Rutherford of Decatur, Joseph L. Rutherford (Cindy) of Rome, NY, and Susan York (Brian) also of Decatur.
He leaves 11 Grandchildren: Thomas III, Jennifer, Sarah, Jason, Justin, Paul, Matthew Sr., Sasha, Whitney, Kelsey, and Amanda. Also 8 Great Grandchildren: Andrew, Jocelynn, Matthew Jr., Elisha, Wyatt, Nikolas, Taylor, and Lincoln.
Also surviving is his Sister-in-law Bonnie Cothern of Pana, IL, and Brother-in-Law Lynn Baker of Decatur. Tom also leaves many special nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife Joan, parents, brothers, Charles and Leroy Knowles, sister, Catherine Baker, Sister-in-law Kay (Ray) Brunk and Great Grand Son Shawn Rutherford.
Services celebrating his life will be at First Lutheran Church, 250 W Decatur, Decatur, IL on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:00am; Pastor Michael Hoy will be officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL. Visitation will Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 5:00-7:00pm at Moran and Goebel 2801 N. Monroe, Decatur, IL. Memorials: First Lutheran Church, Decatur, IL
