DECATUR -- Olive Avonne “Vonnie” Turner, 91, of Decatur passed away Tuesday, December 05, 2017 in Hickory Point Christian Village, surrounded by her loving family.
Vonnie was born October 3, 1926 in Modesto, Illinois, the daughter of Amal and Bessie (Hare) Dunn. She married Johnnie Turner in Decatur July 18, 1946 and they shared sixty-five years of blessings before his death in 2011.
She worked various jobs throughout her life including waitressing, Shoppers World, General Electric, and Borg-Warner Automotive. After Johnnie’s retirement in 1987, they spent many winters camping in Texas and enjoying fun times with family and friends.
Vonnie is survived by their triplet daughters, Marilyn (Jim) Corley, Marla (Larry) Winkleblack, and Marcy (Leroy) Dillow; five grandchildren, Kaye (Mike) Moran, Billy (Becky) Guernsey, Jill (Chad) Bolin, Matt (Stacey) Corley, and Brandon (Angie) Guernsey; fifteen great-grandchildren, Ryan and Nathan Moran, Ashley, Britney, Caleb, and Dustin Guernsey, Hunter, Connor, Alexis and Tristan Bolin, McKenna, Reece, and Zane Corley, and Raelyn and Madilyn Guernsey; plus four great-great-grandchildren, Brady, Bridger, and Bowan Paden and Simon Rodriguez. Also surviving are two sisters, Annie Willis and Barbara Molen and two brothers, Jay and Frank Dunn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, and infant daughter, Karen Gail.
Vonnie (and Johnnie) enjoyed spending time with their family and their greatest joy was doing things with their girls, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren like babysitting, attending sporting events, camping and traveling. She was an incredible wife, mother, and friend to all who knew her. She spent her life doing things for others and was always there when needed. She leaves us remembering her beautiful smile, as well as wonderful memories of an independent, but kind, gentle, and caring lady.
Funeral services celebrating Vonnie’s life will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 8, 2017 in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 AM prior to the service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to “The Seeing Eye”, Washington Valley Road, P.O. Box 375, Morristown, NJ 07963-0375, in memory of Windy, Marla’s first seeing eye dog.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at Hickory Point Christian Village and especially the caring, loving nurses and care-givers for the special attention given our mother during her short stay at their facility.
