DECATUR — For years, maybe eight or 10, Tammy Maxwell served on the Millikin University employee recognition committee, which selects an employee of the month and the employee of the year. She was ineligible for the awards.

No longer on the committee, she is at last being recognized. The assistant director of Human Resources was named employee of the month in January and last week was selected as employee of the year, chosen from among the 10 employees of the month.

Diane Lane, Maxwell’s supervisor, said: “I can think of no one more worthy of this award. She is caring, cooperative, empathetic, self-motivated, loyal, conscientious, sincere and kind. She is a valuable member of our team. I could not do what I do without her.”

Maxwell joined the Millikin staff in September 1998 as a part-timer after being a stay-at-home mother of three children. She was promoted to her present job in 2004.

“I’m honored and humble,” she said as two grandchildren rushed to her side with bouquets of flowers. She and her husband, Don, have three children and three grandchildren with a fourth grandchild on the way.

She has been juggling family, work and school. She graduates from the PACE program May 18 with a bachelor’s degree. That’s the Professional Adult Comprehensive Education Program. Maxwell’s youngest son, Jeremiah, is also on the Millikin graduating list.

In addition to the prestige, Maxwell’s award includes a number of gift certificates and perks, including one week of additional paid vacation.
