Imagine walking down a hotel hallway and passing a thousand-pound horse on your way to the elevator! That was the case recently for guests at the Supreme 8 motel in Georgetown, Kentucky when a woman checked in with her horse, a 5-year-old thoroughbred named Blizz.
Lindsey Partridge was en route from Canada to Kentucky with her five horses to attend a show called the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover. Before dropping her horses off at the nearby stable, the 31-year-old riding instructor first decided to check into the Super 8 and unload her baggage.
Noticing a dog in the lobby, Partridge remarked to the receptionist that she hadn’t been aware the establishment had a pet-friendly policy. She made a joke that she had a few horses outside and asked if they were allowed in, too. To her shock, the hotel employee reportedly responded with, “Oh, I don’t care. Sure, bring them in.”
Seeing an opportunity to take some funny photos, the equestrian unloaded Blizz—since “she was the easiest to get off the trailer”—and paid the $10 pet fee.
Kentucky may be considered the “horse capital of the world,” due in part to the Kentucky Derby, but Partridge admitted that her fellow guests “were pretty surprised” to see a horse inside the hotel. They seemed to know it was all in good fun, but Partridge still hopes that their experience “shows people that horses really can be quiet, calm and nice.”
While Blizz did get to check out the hotel room and watch TV with her owner, the gray mare only stayed for a little while before being returned to the stables for the night.
Sadly, for any other horse owners hoping to save on barn fees while they travel, don’t pack those bags just yet. The Super 8 has since clarified their pet policy, writing in a statement that “We did not know she was going to bring the horse into the facility. We are pet-friendly, and it is [for animals] 25 pounds and under. We had no knowledge of it being in the room.”
So, for now, even the cuddliest of pet horses will have to stick to sleeping in a stable.
