CLAY JACKSON, HERALD & REVIEW

DECATUR — One person was found dead after a fire at a senior-living apartment complex on Tuesday night. Officials did not release details about whether the fire caused the death or if the person was dead before it started.

The fire was contained to a third-floor room of Oxford House Apartments in the 2700 block of North Monroe Street, where the dead person was found inside, Decatur fire Battalion Chief Mike McGeehon said.

The person's name and cause of death were not available Tuesday night because it's an ongoing investigation, McGeehon said.

Members of the Decatur Fire Department respond Tuesday to a fire and reported fatality at the Oxford House, 2700 N. Monroe St.

McGeehon said they were dispatched just before 5 p.m. and the fire was put out within 10 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and he could not provide a damage estimate Tuesday night.

Third-floor residents were moved to lower floors as firefighters worked and cleared heavy smoke, McGeehon said. They returned to apartments once the fire was out, he said.

No other injuries were reported, McGeehon said.
