DECATUR — Police arrested a Decatur man early Sunday they said was carrying a garbage bag filled with more than 9 pounds of cannabis.

A sworn affidavit said the 44-year-old man was intercepted by patrol officers about 1:20 a.m inside a house in the 1300 block of East Whitmer Street, where police had been called to investigate a “burglary in progress.”

The drug, packed in nine freezer bags, police said, had a wholesale value of more than $5,000, with police estimating the street value, once broken down into smaller amounts for individual sales, would be much higher.

The man was booked on preliminary charges of possession of cannabis and resisting a police officer, as the affidavit said the man tried to run and hide when confronted by officers. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state's attorney's office.

Police said a preliminary charge of residential burglary also was filed because there were signs the front door of the East Whitmer home had been forced open.

The man, who does not yet have an attorney, remained in the Macon County Jail on Monday without bond.
