DECATUR — Police are investigating after a Decatur man was beaten up and and then shot twice Sunday night.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said patrol officers discovered the 21-year-old victim lying on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of North Edward Street at 8:41 p.m.

“He was found to be bleeding from the mouth and nose and was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the right leg and left foot,” added Copeland. He said the blood coming from the victim's mouth and nose was the result of a physical beating before the man was shot.

Copeland said police found the remains of a “hastily abandoned” dice game in a backyard nearby and the victim told them he had been gambling. He said he had been attacked by several unknown male suspects after walking away from the game.

“A vehicle in the area was found to have numerous bullet holes in it, and it looks like that happened as part of the same incident,” Copeland said.

Police investigations were continuing Monday.
