DECATUR — An investigation is continuing after an 18-month-year baby boy turned up at a Decatur hospital covered in severe bruising.

The baby had been brought into HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Thursday night by his mother, who was referred to the hospital by a doctor who feared the child may have suffered a serious injury, according to Sgt. Josh Sheets with Decatur police. He said while hospital staff found no broken bones or concussion, they did conclude the injuries were suspicious.

The baby had contusions on his forehead, right thigh and one that measured 5 inches wide on his left thigh, police said, and a contusion on the baby's back was hand-shaped. The injuries were first noticed by the child's great grandmother, who babysits him. Police and the Department of Children and Family Services are investigating.
