DECATUR — Police are investigating a Decatur baby’s broken leg as possible child abuse.

The 2-month-old boy was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital on Tuesday with a swollen left leg and foot, Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said. An emergency room doctor who discovered the bone fracture then became concerned about the nature of the injury.

“According to the doctor, it appeared to be a non-accidental traumatic injury,” Copeland said.

The hospital contacted the Department of Children and Family Services, which contacted the police. Copeland said he did not know who had custody of the child while the investigation proceeds. A message left for the department's juvenile investigations unit was not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.
