DECATUR — An opportunist who walked off with a handheld inventory device and printer — together worth $3,800 — was quickly tracked down and arrested after the incident was caught on video, police said.

A sworn affidavit said the equipment was being used by an employee of Deli Express on Friday afternoon while checking merchandise at the Circle K convenience store at 501 N. Main St., Decatur. He put the items down for a moment to go outside, and they were gone when he returned.

Officer Briar Weddle reviewed in-store surveillance video and recognized the 45-year-old man seen walking off with the equipment, the affidavit said. Weddle left the store and immediately spotted the man walking in the 100 block of West Cerro Gordo Street and arrested him.

The man remained in the Macon County Jail on Tuesday night in lieu of $5,000 bond. He faces a preliminary charge of theft over $500. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
