DECATUR – Police patrol officers recovered 12 spent shell casings early Saturday after getting reports of shots fired in the 1500 block of North Edward Street in Decatur.

Sgt. Josh Sheets said police had responded to the area around 2 a.m but the shooters had fled. “One witness said he was lying on his couch in his residence when he heard approximately 15 shots fired in rapid manner,” said Sheets. The witness had seen two hooded figures running away in different directions but didn't see if they had weapons.

Sheets said officers searched the area and found nine 9mm spent casings lying in the roadway in the 400 block of West Center Street close to Edward Street. Another three casings were found on the sidewalk. There was no sign of bullet damage to surrounding buildings.
