DECATUR — A Decatur police officer deployed a short burst from a large can of pepper spray early Sunday to break up a fight going on in the middle of a city street.

Sgt. Timothy Maxwell said the officer came upon the fight around 1:23 a.m. in the 800 block of North Water Street. A group of four or six females were battling each other with their fists while a mob of roughly 50 or 60 men and women were gathered around to watch. Maxwell said the officer dispersed a “short burst” from what he described as a pepper spray “fogger” which is used to control unruly people in crowd situations.

Maxwell said everybody then took off running, including both fighters and spectators, and there were no arrests and no reports of injuries from the fighting.
