FORSYTH — Macon County sheriff's deputies intercepted a woman Wednesday afternoon after they said she walked out of a Hickory Point Mall store with nearly $500-worth of items she had not paid for.

Von Maur staff alerted police after they had seen her stealing and deputies pulled her car over as she drove north on U.S. 51. Deputy S.L. Beck, in a sworn affidavit, said he found a new gray purse in her trunk “stuffed with merchandise” bearing Von Maur sales tags. The total value came to $498.

The 27-year-old woman was escorted back to the store where police said she admitted stealing the purse and contents, the affidavit said. She was jailed on a charge of retail theft, and Von Maur and the mall have banned her from their premises.
