DECATUR – Two Indiana men who were allegedly transporting more than 10 pounds of marijuana to sell in Decatur were arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 72.

A gray 2016 Dodge Dart with Ohio license plates was traveling east on Interstate 72 on Dec. 21, when police pulled it over for traffic violations.

The driver, 41-year-old Tulane Hardaway, and the passenger, 35-year-old Quentin Hawkins, both told police they were traveling from St. Louis.

“During the stop, numerous indicators of criminal activity were observed relative to Hardaway's behavior and their travel plans,” said a probable cause affidavit by Decatur Street Crimes Unit detective Chad Larner.

Larner used his K-9 partner, Leeroy, to conduct a sniff investigation of the exterior of the car, which indicated the presence of narcotics.

“When asked about the presence of marijuana inside of the vehicle, Hardaway stated, 'There shouldn't be,'” Larner wrote in his statement. Hardaway acknowledged to police during the roadside stop that he had seen the inside of the trunk the previous day.

Detectives found in the trunk a sealed plastic bag containing 11 bags containing high-grade marijuana with a street value of more than $50,000.

When questioned about the marijuana in the trunk, Hardaway “then denied having been inside the trunk and denied knowledge and ownership.”

However, he did admit that a bag containing about 3.3 grams of marijuana, found inside his coat pocket, belonged to him.

Detectives also found a bag containing about 4 grams of marijuana in the possession of Hawkins. He also denied that he owned the marijuana found in the trunk.

Both men were booked into the Macon County Jail, with bonds set for each at $250,000. Each man was charged Wednesday with felony counts of cannabis trafficking, punishable by eight to 30 years in prison, and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

Hardaway was arraigned on his charges Thursday. He is due in court Jan. 18 for his preliminary hearing.

Hawkins was released from jail after posting $25,000 cash bail Dec. 27 and is due in court Jan. 24 for his arraignment.
