NEWTON — The Illinois State Police said a Newton man was injured when the van he was driving struck a vehicle on Illinois 130 about a quarter mile south of Newton on Thursday night.

Police said Thane J. Griffith, 28, was driving north on Illinois 130 in Jasper County toward construction zone at 9:30 p.m. A vehicle was stopped at the construction zone for a red light, and Griffith failed to stop and struck the other car from behind, police said. Griffith was taken to Carle Richland Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries was unavailable.

Police said Griffith was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, failure to wear a seat belt, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating an uninsured vehicle.
