VANDALIA — A 37-year-old California man was arrested Sunday after troopers seized $960,000 worth of heroin in his Dodge Caravan during a traffic stop, Illinois State Police said Tuesday.

In a media release, Trooper Tammy Welborn said a trooper patrolling Interstate 70, east of Vandalia, initiated the stop at about 8:10 a.m. The trooper pulled the driver of the van over because he was speeding, she said, and during a search of the vehicle, about 6 pounds of heroin was discovered inside.

The driver was arrested and held in the Fayette County Jail on Sunday, on the preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance and controlled substance trafficking.

Those charges are subject to review by the Fayette County State's Attorney's Office, which Welborn said assisted with the investigation along with the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force.

The driver also received a warning for speeding, Welborn said.
