DECATUR - Police in Decatur believe the same pair of thieves are responsible for theft and attempted thefts from four vending machines early Saturday that left a damage bill in the hundreds of dollars.

They struck first at Coca-Cola and Pepsi machines near the Kroger store at 1818 Airport Plaza. The bill acceptor parts of both machines were damaged but nothing appears to have been taken. They then targeted a Pepsi machine outside of Ed’s Auto Service, 1280 S. Jasper St., damaging the machine, and then broke successfully into a Pepsi machine outside the K-Mart store at 1155 E. Pershing Road, escaping with an unknown quantity of cash. The damage to that machine alone was more than $300.

A witness who saw the robbers when they struck at South Jasper described them as two white males in their 20s; one was breaking into the machines while the other acted as a look out.
