DECATUR — The Decatur Housing Authority will open the waiting list for the housing choice voucher program, commonly known as Section 8, for one day only on Wednesday.
People interested in applying need to pick up an application in person between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Then, they will need to mail it the same day. The applications the housing authority receives Thursday will be included in a lottery to be placed on the waiting list, officials said.
Only 200 people will be chosen by a computer program for the list, housing authority officials said at the Decatur Housing Authority board meeting Thursday.
The last waiting list open period was June 1. Almost 1,000 people picked up an application and 700 were returned the next day, said Brenda Kraus, director of operations at the housing authority.
Of those, 300 were selected for the waiting list and were either given a voucher and found an apartment or dismissed from the list over the last five months, she said.
