CHARLESTON — Coles County Sheriff Jimmy Rankin has announced that he plans to run for re-election next year.
Rankin is a Republican who was first elected sheriff in 2014.
In his announcement, he said he was able to complete initiatives during his first term at no additional taxpayer expense, including officer visibility and training.
Rankin is the second candidate to announce plans to seek the position. Steve Spear, a deputy with the office, announced in April that he plans to run for the office, also as a Republican.
The sheriff's position is one of the offices that will be elected in November 2018, following the March primary. The filing period for candidates to appear on the primary ballot will be in December.
