CLINTON — A Decatur man has been given tickets for failure to stop and not wearing a seat belt in connection with a two-vehicle crash that killed a Clinton couple on Saturday.
Illinois State Police said Tuesday that Andrew Johnson was charged. Tony Hable and his wife, Karen, both 57, died in the crash.
Police said the crash occurred about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the couple's car was traveling north on U.S. 51 north of Clinton.
Johnson, whose age was not available, was driving a semitruck loaded with grain west on Autumn Road (DeWitt County Road 960N). It crossed the northbound lane to head south on U.S. 51 toward Clinton. The car and the semi trailer collided, according to the crash report.
The victims were pronounced dead at the scene at 5:58 p.m., the DeWitt County Coroner's Office said. Johnson was not hurt.
The crash remained under investigation by the Illinois State Police, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office and DeWitt County Coroner’s Office.
The Hables were active members of St. John's Church in Clinton, including the church's religious education program and choir, and with other charitable work in the community.
A special prayer service was held Sunday afternoon at the church. The Hables have two adult children, Emily and Allen, the Rev. Jim Henning said. Tony was employed with Exelon.
"They were just both very generous people. They embodied what it means to be charitable," Henning said of the couple on Sunday.
