SPRINGFIELD — Drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution when traveling northbound Interstate 55 following an accident with two semitrucks Monday morning, Illinois State Police said.

The accident occurred near milepost 89 just north of Lake Springfield, according to a news release from the police.

The left two lanes are open, but drivers should use caution when traveling, police said. A minor fuel spill is still being cleaned up on the road, police said but they expected it to be finished by 11 a.m. today.

At 5:02 a.m. today, state police said, William R. Barnes of Livingston, Illinois,crossed into the right lane in front of Juan E. Hernandez-Valadez of Matamoros, Mexico, causing Hernandez-Valadez to strike the back of Barnes. No injuries were reported.

Police cited Barnes with improper lane usage.
