CHARLESTON — An Effingham man was hit by a car Saturday night after walking in the middle of Illinois 16 while intoxicated, police reported.
Jerry D. Guthrie, 35, was intoxicated and also texting on his cellphone while walking in the middle of Illinois 16 near Loxa Road at 9:12 p.m. Saturday, according to an accident report by the Charleston Police Department.
A vehicle driven by Albert K. Ellington, 65, of Kansas was heading east and Ellington said he was unable to see Guthrie until he was close to him because it was night and Guthrie was not wearing bright or reflective clothing. Ellington said he attempted to avoid Guthrie and struck him with his driver side mirror.
Guthrie was knocked down but got back up and was walking around looking for his cellphone, police said.
Guthrie was cited for improper walking on a highway and was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon due to injuries sustained during the accident. The hospital doesn’t release condition reports.
