MATTOON - A multiple-vehicle accident just north of Mattoon on Interstate 57 killed three people on Memorial Day.

Coles County Coroner's Office personnel said late Monday that those who died in the fatal accident were from out of state.

Illinois State Police reported the accident closed the northbound lanes of the interstate, and that stretch of highway likely would be closed overnight Monday and into early today. It occurred just north of the newest I-57 interchange on Mattoon's north side.

According to state police, nine vehicles, including a semitruck, were involved in the accident. Although it is still under investigation, preliminary information showed that a truck driver was distracted while driving and rear-ended another vehicle, causing the pileup, state police reported.

In addition to the three people killed, several people were hurt, with injuries ranging from scrapes and bruises to trauma requiring hospitalization.
