DECATUR — A man accused of breaking into a pair of Decatur homes led authorities to him with his blood, police said.

Sworn affidavits said the 52-year-old suspect smashed glass in a front door, cutting himself, when he broke into a house in the 1200 block of East Walnut Street on Feb. 18 and stole a video game system and diapers.

The affidavit said he cut himself again Feb. 21 while breaking a window to enter a house in the 1400 block of North Jasper Street to steal a television and more diapers.

Decatur police detective James Atkinson said police collected blood samples each time, and an Illinois State Police database made a match with the suspect’s DNA, which was indexed due to his criminal record.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of residential burglary. He remained in the Macon County Jail on Thursday in lieu of posting $10,000 bond.
