THUMBS UP! To the start of construction of the Nelson Park amphitheater. Christy-Foltz Inc. submitted the low bid for the project, one of the key elements to work at Nelson Park. The amphitheater is expected to be finished in the summer, by July 29, 2018. That would set the stage for a potential fall concert to christen the venue.
THUMBS DOWN! To copper thieves. Damages to and thefts of central air conditioning units around the community have been attributed to an increase in the price of copper. That increase means the metal inside air conditioners have a value as scrap. Units can be easy targets because of their location. There are preventative measures, including cages, locking the disconnect box, cameras, GPS units and the website scrapmetalalert.com. We're annoyed and discouraged that the best suggestion to curb the thefts is to take such measures.
THUMBS UP! To a safe Halloween evening for trick-or-treaters. We should never take safety for granted, so two thumbs up to all parents who drove slow and walked neighborhoods with their children, and the same to the children who paid attention, got out of the car on the side they were instructed, looked both ways to be sure nothing was approaching, and celebrated an exciting day safely.
THUMBS DOWN! To the vandals with the BB gun. There were 19 car widows damaged in an evening of BB gun nonsense earlier this week. That follows 20 windows damaged the same way in August. The events may not be connected, but the victims share in frustration and aggravation. Police are appealing for help from the public in tracking down the culprits. Call 217-424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at 217-423-8477.
THUMBS UP! And welcome to Burger Theory. The restaurant is attached to the new Holiday Inn & Suites Decatur-Forsyth. The burger chain is associated exclusively with Holiday Inn hotels. One of its boasts is 24 varieties of bottles and 12 craft beers on tap, and a third of the beers sold are from local breweries. Decatur's restaurant scene is crowded, but quality always finds a way to rise to the top in a community that loves dining out.
