It is so easy to take a stand these days.

It is easy to take a stand against abortion, especially if you have never needed one. It is easy to take a stand against entitlement programs for the poor if you have never been poor. It is easy to take a stand against government regulations if you have never directly benefited from their protections.

It is easy to take a stand against the dire predictions of climate change if you have no property on the Marshall Islands. It is easy to take a stand against gay rights if you have never raised a gay son or daughter.

It is easy to take a stand against a protesting black football player if your family has never suffered years of systemic racist bias. And it is easy to take a stand against gun control if you have never buried a child unlucky enough to be on the wrong end of an assault weapon.

It is so easy to take a stand from a distance; from the safety of your own myopic perspective. It is so easy when it doesn’t really effect you … yet.
