This is in response to my friend Don Carmichael’s letter in the Oct. 20 edition.

He implies that communism is alive and well in America, thanks to ‘closet’ communistic progressives. Hogwash. Wikipedia states the Communist Party of America party has 5,000 members now. That’s barely enough for a good hate rally.

Then he lumps together liberals, progressives, socialists and communists. Each of those groups has differing beliefs from the others. He implies they all oppose ‘private property, police, firearms and free speech.’ Bernie Sanders received millions of votes in the 2016 primaries. He is a proud democratic socialist, as am I. He is not opposed to private ownership of anything. His two priorities are universal health for all and greater equality of income distribution. Polls show a majority of Americans agree. He might well have become president had it not been for obscene amounts of money spent by Clinton, Trump and the Koch brothers.

Poll after poll shows America becoming more diverse, younger and more ‘progressive’ in politics. That’s why Clinton won the 2016 popular vote by more than 3 million. Polls also show those same folks are less truly religious than older Americans and becoming less religious each year.

Don insists on bringing religion into the political debate, in spite of our founding fathers very wise admonition to keep them completely separate. He says ‘as scripture teaches, only fools say there is no God.’ Of course. The purpose of religion and the bible is to promote their own belief system.

Anyone or any religion promoting an ‘our way is the only way’ agenda is close minded and extremely prejudiced against any belief system which differs from theirs. That, in turn, is the major sin of all religions and the cause of a great deal of human misery and death throughout the world.
