As pro-life Illinois residents and taxpayers, we are so dismayed that Gov. Rauner signed HB 40 into law.

This law is designed to ensure that abortion remains legal in Illinois, and it requires taxpayers to pay for Medicaid abortions.

Before George Ryan, the last Republican governor, went to prison on federal corruption charges, he redeemed himself in the eyes of many by declaring a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois. Gov. Ryan’s decision was influenced by Northwestern University’s Innocence Project, which had uncovered evidence that many death row inmates were innocent of capital crimes.

Since Ryan’s moratorium, the death penalty has been eliminated in Illinois for everyone except the most vulnerable among us –- the humans who have not yet been born. We think Illinois HB 40 is reprehensible. Maybe some student journalists at Northwestern University could uncover evidence that unborn humans are innocent and worthy of society’s protection, and Gov. Rauner could then redeem himself by declaring a moratorium on the death penalty (abortion) for them.
