MONMOUTH — In a game that was close throughout, Monmouth pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Millikin women's basketball team 61-53 on Sunday.
The game was tied 18-18 after a quarter of play and the Big Blue led 31-27 at half. Monmouth rallied in the third quarter to pull ahead 43-41 at the end of three periods.
Millikin shot just 34.5 percent from the field and struggled from 3-point range, making 2-of-13 (15 percent). Monmouth shot 45 percent from the field and went 6-of-17 (35 percent) from 3-point range. The Fighting Scots won the rebounding battle 39-31.
Millikin's top scorer was junior Yanni Saddler with 18 points. Freshman Jordan Hildebrand added 12. Senior Lauren Moses had a team high seven rebounds along with five points.
Becca Gallis led Monmouth with 20 points.
Millikin fell to 5-7, while Monmouth improved to 5-6.
The Big Blue will return to Colllege Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when it hosts Elmhurst College.
