Big Blue shine in relays
GENEVA, Ohio -- Battling a wet track and rainy conditions, the Millikin 4x100 relay team finished in second place in their heat and qualified for Saturday’s finals at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.
The Big Blue set a program record in the process, being timed in 41.22. The time was fourth fastest in the two prelim heats of qualifying.
The finals for the event will be Saturday at 11:15 a.m. The relay team had qualified with the 13th fastest time (41.32).
Earlier in the day, Jacob Segrest earned All-American status in the long jump with an eighth-place finish. He had a best of 23-1 1/4. Segrest, who was also a member of the 4x100 relay team, qualified with the 11th best jump.
Segrest finished sixth in the Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
Four on region team
NEW ORLEANS – Four members of the Millikin men's track and field team have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's all-region team for the Division III outdoor season.
The Midwest Region team includes Millikin's Jacob Segrest in the long jump and the 4x100 relay team of Segrest, Tyler Kimbrough, Christian Zenon and R.J. O'Connor.
Segrest was the CCIW champion in the long jump and had a season-best performance of 24-1 3/4. The 4x100 relay team won the CCIW championships. The group's season best time and Millikin record setting time was 42.32 seconds.
Bruce on all-region team
Sophomore centerfielder Mason Bruce, a Mount Zion High School product, was selected to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-Region third team. The eight regional teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Bruce was named to the third team for the Central Division. Bruce hit .360 on the year with 58 hits including 10 doubles, three home runs and 30 RBIs. Earlier this month, Bruce was named to the CCIW All-Conference second team.
