NAPERVILLE - In the end, it still felt good to be there.
The sting of Teutopolis' 4-0 loss to Rochester on Friday in the boys' soccer Class A state tournament may have been worn a little by the thought that the team was there for the first time.
"It's been a good season for us," said senior forward Bryce Webber. "I think we surprised a lot of people this year."
Rochester's offense pressed the Wooden Shoes throughout most of the match at North Central College. The Rockets took 26 shots, and forward T.J. Keys recorded his second consecutive hat trick to send Rochester (19-5-3) to today's semifinals.
The game was scoreless through the first 29 minutes, as Rochester dominated possession as the teams slogged through a driving rain.
But Keys started his scoring spree with a header off an Alex Ramsey pass in front of the Teutopolis net with 10:48 left in the first half.
Keys also punched in a loose ball with 28:47 left in the second half and scored on a breakaway four minutes later, pushing his season total to 43.
Rochester's Andrew Redpath scored the final goal with 20:32 remaining. Drew Nuding recorded the assist.
The Wooden Shoes struggled to find any offense during the game and did not make a single shot on goal during the game.
"We got beat," said Shoes coach Josh Cottrill. "We didn't control the ball this game, and one of the things we've done well this year is control the ball."
But despite the loss, Cottrill said he was happy with the way the nine-year-old program performed.
"Obviously you want to be playing tomorrow," he said. "But I felt like this was a good season for us. This is big for the team and the program."
Teutopolis finishes the season 16-9-2.
