Planet Fitness gym is open for business in Brettwood Village on North Water Street in Decatur. The gym will be open 24/7.

DECATUR — Planet Fitness is open in Decatur, and the first customers were working out on the equipment Thursday morning. The 20,000-square-foot gym will operate 24/7 in the Brettwood Village shopping center at 3194 N. Water St.

The gym is expected to employ 12 to 15 people, Becky Zirlen, senior public relations manager for Planet Fitness, told the Herald & Review in an email in August. The company planned to spend $970,310 on renovations, according to documents filed with the city of Decatur Department of Economic and Urban Development.

Contractors were still at the gym Thursday morning, putting finishing touches on the renovations on the shopping center's northwest side. The machines and workout space were set up, and members were already getting in their workouts.

The gym is offering a membership discount through Oct. 31 with a $1 sign-up fee and $10 per month for the least-expensive option. The next level is a sign-up fee of $1 and $21.99 a month.

Planet Fitness markets itself to first-time and casual gym goers and calls the space a “Judgment Free Zone.” Founded in 1992 in Dover, New Hampshire, Planet Fitness is one of the largest and fastest-growing franchises and operators of fitness centers in the United States by number of members and locations.
