Ameren Illinois petitions ICC to lower rates in light of decreased taxes

DECATUR — Ameren Illinois said Monday it has filed a petition with the Illinois Commerce Commission to pass savings to customers that are a result of the recently approved federal tax-cut legislation.

Ameren Illinois electric customers could save an average of $2.50 to $3.00 per month in 2018 and natural gas customers could save an average of $1 per month, if the petitions are approved, the utility said in a news release.

A petition for Ameren's natural gas customers was filed last week and one for electricity customers on Monday. The changes would take effect this year if the petitions are approved. Without the petitions, the savings would not be available to customers until 2020.

Under the new tax plan, Ameren's tax rate will decrease by almost 13 percent, the utility said.

The Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act of 2011 provides a mechanism to return these savings to electric customers, but without filing the petition customers would have to wait until 2020 to receive the benefits. If approved by the ICC, Ameren Illinois said its customers will begin seeing these savings in March.
