Apollo Cafe

Apollo Cafe has been serving Decatur since June 1.

DECATUR — Terrell Hess said he opened a restaurant because he has a natural ability to cook.

“I can just do it,” he said.

Hess is co-owner of Apollo Cafe along with Tony Cook.

The restaurant opened June 1 at 1104 N. Main St. in Decatur. The food has already gotten the restaurant some attention with its mild and spicy options as well as the types of food. Menu items include the Apollo chili dog, Italian beef, loaded nachos, fried bologna and a wide variety of Apollo wings ranging in size from six pieces to 100 pieces.

“The food is something you wouldn’t get at home or at a chain (restaurant),” Hess said.

The chefs at Apollo Cafe are also able to serve larger crowds. Catering is available for games and other events. They also deliver to businesses with orders of a $15 minimum.

The restaurant could be hard to spot for a casual observer, as the front door on North Main Street faces south — the same direction as traffic is traveling, meaning potential customers need to look behind themselves to see the entrance.

But Hess likes the placement of his restaurant. “It is right in the center of town,” he said. “And we have a lot of walking traffic.”

The owners created their menu to appeal to the foot traffic they often encounter. “The nachos and a hot dog, you can walk and eat those,” Hess said.

The restaurant's hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. Call (217) 330-6562.
