FORSYTH — The first "creative gym" in the area recently opened at Hickory Point Mall, offering spaces for crafters to learn, connect and create.
A Crafting Experience offers table space, sewing machines, embroidery machines and different quilt machines. It also provides classes for youth and adults.
"I'm hoping many more instructors will join us," said owner Angie Sagha in a statement. "I foresee classes in flower arranging, jewelry making, doll making and many other crafts. The Decatur area has some incredibly talented people."
The business opened July 1, but will celebrate its grand opening from 5 to 7 p.m. July 27. Sagha said she scheduled the event later in the month to wait for the gym's signage to be installed.
A Crafting Experience will offer daily, weekly or monthly passes, as well as memberships. Discounts for seniors, students, youth and military will be available.
The idea for a creative gym came after Sagha's father died. She wanted to make a quilt of his shirts, but couldn't find anyone to do it fast enough. She ended up making it herself — and then crafting another, and another, until the supplies started to take over her bedroom.
She rented her own studio before realizing she wanted to "make a place available for other people who might not have a space to work and who are unable to purchase expensive machinery."
Sagha said she hopes to bring people together who love to do creative things.
"Connecting with others over things we love brings so much joy," she said.
