DECATUR — More than a dozen downtown businesses will remain open a few hours later once a month leading up to the annual Christmas Walk.

“Part of the long-term success is getting people out, especially those from work commitments,” said Cynthia Deadrick, owner of Shop on Main, a women's clothing store on North Main Street.

This prompted her to reach out to other downtown businesses, asking them to extend hours on the first Wednesday of the month. Participating businesses will be open until 7 p.m.

The First Wednesday Downtown event on Facebook lists a total of 13 businesses participating.

Mike Delaney, Decanter Fine Wine & Spirits co-owner, said his business already closes at 7 p.m., but he supports any effort to have businesses focused on a common cause.

“We all work together and support each other,” he said. “We like to support whatever businesses downtown do.”

Deadrick said the other benefit is to help lead into the annual Christmas Walk held on Wednesday, Dec. 4. She said she hopes the beautiful fall scenery can bring in the Christmas season.

“We wanted to make it a grand finale, finding a night downtown that could be something for people to remember,” she said. “A lot of businesses do special hours and events, so we're following a trend.”

Businesses began implementing later hours on Wednesday and will include each month until the day of the walk, when they will operate until 8 p.m.
