DECATUR — Valentine’s Day dates with fancy attire in a classy ballroom, perhaps part of a bygone era, are back and helping raise money for two charities.

Proceeds from the ball will be split between two organizations, the Mary Kay Charitable Foundation and Dove Inc. Event sponsors Penny Hood and Vickie Cooper, have connections with both agencies as Mary Kay representatives and ambassadors for the foundation.

Organizers have created an evening filled with live music entertainment and dancing. To commemorate the evening, guests can have their photos taken by a professional photographer. They will also have the opportunity to bid during a silent auction. Items in the auction include jewelry, tea sets, luggage, purses and gift cards. Non-alcoholic drinks and light refreshments will be provided

“It raises money for cancer research for cancers affecting women and children and grants for domestic violence shelters all across the United States,” Cooper said. “As ambassadors for the organization, we wanted to be involved in doing something not only for the national organization, but here locally.”

Hood has a personal connection with Dove Inc. About seven years ago, she said she received ongoing advice from the agency while her daughter was trying to escape a relationship that had become violent. She said Dove was extremely helpful for her and her daughter.

“My daughter's life shines as a seven-year strong survivor,” she said. “I am grateful for the support Dove gave us.”
