DECATUR — This year marks the fifth year the Decatur Celebration organizers have crowned a king and queen during the festival.
The royal couple will be announced on Friday, Aug. 3, the first day of the festival.
King and queen candidates have been campaigning for the title since the announcement in May.
“We have an incredible group of men and women who are going to dedicate all their spring and summer to fundraising for the Decatur Celebration,” said Lori Sturgill, producer for the Celebration, during the candidates' announcement. “They love the Celebration and they know how to have a good time.”
The competition was designed as a fundraiser for the Celebration. According to Sturgill, it has been successful. “It is has made a difference in the festival,” she said.
Celebration Development Director Tammy Ashby is assisting with the competition.
"It's become a great way for professionals to help get their name out their and a way for those that believe in the Celebration to give back and help," she said.
The man and woman to raise the most money will reign throughout this year’s Decatur Celebration. The public had the opportunity to meet all of the contenders during the French Fried 5K in June. Since the announcement, each candidate has created their own fundraisers all in hopes of winning the crowns.
The winners receive VIP parking and passes, which includes a golf cart and meet-and-greets with the stage acts, for the Celebration weekend. They will also be featured as the Grand Marshals of the Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade on Saturday. “But that’s not why they are doing it,” Sturgill said. “They do this because they care about the community and they love the Decatur Celebration.”
