Dr. Dan Smith said the move of the HSHS Medical Group Family Medicine facility from Mount Zion to the former site of the Big Creek Stables, is just that, a location change.
“A building is just a building,” he said, albeit a very nice one. “It's the people that make it a home.”
A ribbon-cutting and blessing event was held this week in advance of its opening on Monday.
The new 12,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is located at 4965 E. Lost Bridge Road. It replaces a building Smith opened nearly 32 years ago after getting a call to come home and establish a family practice.
Smith noted the crowd at Monday's blessing ceremony included a mother and her toddler. The mother, who was a toddler at the time, was there for the opening of the building they are leaving.
It's those types of relationships that are important to Smith and Dr. Brooke Ballard, who will continue leading the team that also includes providers Julie Auton, Joya Ryan and Amanda Shils.
Patients will continue to be greeted and treated by the same people they have come to know, Smith said.
But there will be some changes. Some of the most notable things patients will notice are the covered entryway and on-site access to an X-ray suite, Ballard said.

Smith is hopeful the team, and their patients, will benefit from the addition of more doctors in the future.
Smith is certain this will be the last building move he oversees. Instead, that would fall to Ballard, whom he identified as “the future of this practice.”
