DECATUR -- Mrs. Lois Hodgins Hedrick passed away on February 13, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Gale C. Hedrick for 53 years; devoted mother of Susan (Benno) Hedrick of Vashon Island, WA; Melissa (Charles) Wolf of Augusta, GA; and Melinda (Stephen) Chadwick of Decatur, IL; proud grandmother of Emily (Gregory), Nicholson (Ashley), and Charles; and loving great-grandmother of Madeleine, Charles, and Cameron.

Lois was born on May 5, 1923 in Ontario, Canada. She was raised in South Bend, Indiana and attended Miami University of Ohio. She and Gale raised their family in Decatur, Illinois with enormous love, energy, and style. She was a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher at St. John’s Episcopal. She was a skilled seamstress, knitter, and cook, canning tomatoes and pickles from her garden. Lois and Gale were active members of the Country Club of Decatur. She was an active member of Junior Welfare and played lead roles in many of their children’s theater productions including a dynamic Aladdin and Hansel. She took classes in history and literature at Millikin University and pursued knowledge as a member of many book and study groups. She proudly served as President of the Board of the Decatur Public Library. She could knit and read at the same time (often a novel by Barbara Pym or other English writer) while watching Masterpiece Theater. She adored music ranging from Mahler and Shostakovich to Johnny Mathis and Barbara Streisand. Lois and Gale traveled the world in the company of their children and many good friends. It is important to say that she did all this while working full time as a pioneering business woman, founding and running her own employment agency, Hedrick Personnel. Her sharp sense of humor made things lively throughout her life.

After many years of splitting time between Decatur, Illinois and Augusta, Georgia, Lois and Gale moved to Augusta full time in 2000. They enjoyed the beautiful gardens and new friends in Augusta and were pleased to move into Brandon Wilde 16 years ago. The family is so very grateful for the loving and skilled care Lois received at Brandon Wilde and from the employees and volunteers at Trinity Hospice.

The family is holding a private service at a later date.
