DECATUR -- Retired SFC Early “Pig” “Smitty” Smith of Clarksville, TN (formerly of Decatur, IL) died peacefully at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 in Nashville, TN at the age of 63.

Early was born on May 6, 1954 in Gunnison, MS the son of Roy and Addie Mae (Miller) Smith.

Early is survived by his wife, Linda; his children Dominique (Joseph) Booker, Stashia Smith, Kayla Smith, Stephaney (Will) Marshall, Antawan (Natalia) Smith, and Dawntessa (Di’Angelo) Hills; brothers: Roy Smith Jr. and Wayne Smith; sisters; Linda (A.D. Sanders) Smith and Brenda Taylor; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren a host of special cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends especially- James Collier and Ken McDaniels.

He retired with 22 years of service in the Army. He worked for many years at Climate Control and at the Decatur Park District. He loved to work out, sit in the sauna, listen to his music and watch the news to stay up on current events. He was very meticulous about his yard and landscaping. Anyone who knew him could say he had a witty and sarcastic personality and he was blunt, but that was just him.

The visitation will be in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home on Thursday July 20, 2017 from 9:30-11:30 with the funeral following at 11:30 am with burial at 2pm at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL with military honors conducted by the Inter-Veteran's Burial Detail of Sangamon County. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Early’s life. Flowers and condolences for the family may be sent to Moran & Goebel.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Lottie Patoni, Dixie Smith and Jimmy Smith.
