Boy, 6, plays with lighter, gasoline and suffers life-threatening burns

DECATUR – A 6-year-old Decatur boy suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday evening when he was burned after playing around with a gas can and a lighter, according to police.

“The boy had serious second degree burns on both legs from the waist down,” said Sgt. Brian Earles. “He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital initially and I understand he was then transferred to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield; he's got life-threatening injuries.”

Written police reports said the incident happened around 5:45 p.m at an address in the 800 block of West Wood Street.

Earles said both police, the Decatur Fire Department the Decatur Ambulance Service responded.
