EFFINGHAM -- A single-vehicle accident involving a Freightliner box truck in Effingham sent the passenger in the truck to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital.

The box truck, driven by 23-year-old Emmanuel Chapman of Troy, Mich., was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 at milepost 162 when Chapman fell asleep, left the south side of the roadway and struck the guard rail, crossing the center lanes of traffic and leaving the north side of the roadway, striking the concrete barrier and coming to rest in the middle lane of traffic.

Chapman was cited for improper lane usage, driving a commercial vehicle while fatigued, possession of cannabis while in a commercial vehicle and driving under the influence/drugs and possession of cannabis. 

The passenger, Michael Howd, 36, of Flint, Mich., was taken to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital.
