ARCOLA - A 41-year-old Champaign man was killed when the bicycle he was riding swerved into the path of a pickup truck Saturday morning, according to the Illinois State Police.
Michael T. Patridge was riding his bicycle north alongside U.S. 45, just south of Douglas County Road 600 N when a pickup truck moved to the left to pass him, according to a state police news release.
As the pickup truck, driven by Caleb J. Thomas, 28, of Humboldt passed by him, the bicyclist appeared to lose control “and began riding/falling to the left into the northbound lane,” according to police. The pickup truck struck the bicycle, throwing Patridge. Patridge and the bicycle came to rest in the highway’s northbound lane.
The Douglas County Coroner’s Office pronounced Patridge dead at 10:57 a.m. at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for today.
