DECATUR — The Northeast Community Fund on Friday said that anyone who receives a phone call soliciting donations on behalf of the nonprofit agency should hang up and contact local authorities.

Executive Director Jerry Pelz said one of the agency's supporters recently made him aware that someone with a local phone number called her and was in the process of asking her to donate to the agency before she hung up the phone.

Northeast Community Fund has never asked for donations through phone solicitations, Pelz said. He said the Thursday morning groundbreaking of the organization's future home at 839 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive may have encouraged the scam.

"I think the fact that we've been in the news recently made us an easy target for scammers to try to get something," Pelz said.

Pelz said the agency has contacted Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff's Office about the scam.
